Some Upper Peninsula trips are about sitting quietly by the water. Others start with trailers in the driveway, riding gear by the door, maps spread across the kitchen counter, and a group trying to decide which trail to tackle first.

Snow isn’t required to have fun here.

You could spend your whole vacation riding trails and still have a great trip.

Head farther east along H58 and the landscape keeps changing. Twelve Mile Beach stretches along Lake Superior. The Hurricane River area gives hikers access toward the Au Sable Light Station. Near Grand Marais, the Grand Sable area brings dunes and another side of the national lakeshore into the trip.
Cabintimers who prefer seeing the cliffs from the water can head into Munising and look into one of the area’s boat or guided kayak tours. Lake Superior deserves respect, especially for paddlers, so a guided outing can be a smart way to experience the shoreline.
Spend Some Time in Munising
Munising is close enough that it will probably become part of your stay whether you plan for it or not.
Go into town for breakfast or dinner. Walk around downtown. Browse local shops. Stop for a drink after a long day outside. Check out the harbor. Book a Pictured Rocks cruise or another Lake Superior excursion.
Munising also works well as your resupply stop.

Take H58 Toward Grand Marais
If the weather is good and nobody is in a hurry, make a road-trip day out of H58.
Instead of treating Pictured Rocks as one attraction, treat the entire drive as the attraction.
Stop for overlooks. Walk a trail. Spend time on a Lake Superior beach. Visit the Grand Sable side of the park. Continue into Grand Marais and see where the road takes you.
This is the kind of UP drive where constantly checking the clock misses the point.
Bring snacks. Bring water. Keep a jacket in the vehicle even when the morning feels warm. Lake Superior likes changing the rules halfway through the day.
Add Seney to Your UP Trip
For a completely different pace, head toward Seney National Wildlife Refuge.
Wetlands, forest, wildlife viewing, birding, hiking, biking, and scenic drives make this a good break from trail riding. More than 200 bird species use the refuge. Loons, trumpeter swans, eagles, deer, and other wildlife can turn an ordinary drive into a much longer outing when everyone keeps asking to stop for another photo.
It’s also one of those Upper Peninsula places where doing less usually leads to seeing more.
Slow down. Turn off the music. Roll down the windows when conditions allow. Watch the edges of the water and tree line.
Make a Day Trip to Kitch-iti-kipi

It feels completely different from the Lake Superior shoreline.
