Where you’re staying: Wood Lake + Grantsburg
Grantsburg sits in Burnett County near the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, so you get a friendly small‑town feel with serious outdoor access. Wood Lake is a calm spot to paddle at sunrise, try for panfish or bass, and watch migrating birds cruise overhead.
3 easy ways to spend a day
1) Paddles up on the St. Croix
The upper St. Croix is classic Northwoods water—forested banks, sandbars, and stretches with a little zip. Rent gear or book a shuttle through local outfitters, then float for a few hours and be back in time to grill dinner. Pick a mellow section for the kids or a slightly faster run if your crew wants a splash.
2) Wildlife watching at Crex Meadows
Just a short drive from the cabin, Crex Meadows Wildlife Area is 30,000 acres of wetlands and prairie. Cruise the auto‑tour route, scan for trumpeter swans and sandhill cranes, and pop into the visitor center for maps and current sightings. Photographers, bring the long lens—sunrise light over the marsh is next‑level.
3) Trails and river views in Governor Knowles State Forest
This 32,000‑acre forest parallels the St. Croix and offers hiking, biking, horseback riding, and winter ski/snowmobile routes. Mix a morning trail loop with an afternoon paddle or a lazy shoreline picnic.
Rain plan (or rest day) in town
Brickfield Brewing pours a wide rotating tap list in a restored creamery space across from Memory Lake. Grab a flight on the patio and watch the water.
Memory Lake Park has playgrounds, shelters, and seasonal events—easy fun for littles between adventures.
Seasonal notes for Cabintimers
Spring: Waterfowl migration at Crex Meadows, cool nights by the fire, and quiet trails.
Summer: Prime paddling and fishing. Bring water shoes for sandbar stops.
Fall: Color show across Burnett County; crisp mornings on Wood Lake with steam rising off the surface.
Winter: Pack the fat‑tire bike or skis for forest trails. Warm up back at the cabin with cocoa and a movie.

Your favorite spices or rubs for the grill—kitchen’s ready for it.
Fast Wi‑Fi for remote work or movie nights between hikes.

Just read what one guest had to say about this resort:
‘Hillcrest Resort is a great place to vacation. I love being on the river and yet centrally located on the Manitowish Chain of 10 Lakes so it is easy to get to all the lakes on the Chain. All the cabins are 2-bedroom, they are charming and all the cabins are close to the water. There are 2 places to swim and docks for every cabin as well as a rowboat included in the rental. The firepit is very nice, as well as the playground, the basketball hoop, the paddleboat, the canoe and the snowmobile trail is within 1/8 mile of the cabins and is great in the summertime for hiking and biking. Across the highway is Starr Beach with grills, picnic tables and a sandy walk-in beach. The resort is located within a mile of Little Bohemia Restaurant featured in the recent Johnny Depp film PUBLIC ENEMIES as well as other nice restaurants and a Trigs food store within 2 miles. All all-around fun cabin experience with lots of cabin amenities. I love the time that I have spent at Hillcrest Resort. Caroline Mitchell —5 star’

Here is a little secret if you’re still reading this: A lot of guests mail checks to use weekly or monthly as sort of a “vacation savings account”. Many families find that this is an effective way to set aside their vacation money bit-by-bit. We’ve all felt the pinch of a tough economy and the need to tighten our belts. Use this tool if it helps your family budget.
Timber Lake Lodge
The cabins are fully equipped and furnished with the exception of bath towels, kitchen towels and wash cloths. Please bring those items from home. We provide all bedroom linens including pillows and cases. Even the fire pit has a stocked wooden supply. Perfect for squeezing in one more kid in the car with all that extra room.
The sauna, shower house and private beach. You may just be one of our guests that insist on stoking the sauna to inhuman temperatures and then dashing to the end of a nearby dock for a plunge in Bear Island Lake. Parents who want to shower off the kiddos after a day at the beach will like the convenience of our shower house. There is plenty of room in there for a quick change of clothes too.
Local attractions are a must see for Minnesota. The International Wolf Center and North American Bear Association are near. Some adventurers even cliff dive! Enjoy the guided fishing tours in one of Minnesota’s Boundary waters.
Babbitt, Minnesota hosts tons of activities for teenagers. Enjoy the library, Youth Center and indoor ice arena.
And for those that can’t simply live without Wi-Fi, you can get it at the beach house and beach. Perfect for catching up on emails.

It’s that time of year again. There have been a few warmer days & people are starting to believe that there will indeed be summer. We’ve been starting to see more and more inquiries come through for the summer months, that’s where we come in. We want to help inspire those that are beginning their summer vacation planning. For the next few weeks, we will be sharing some popular Wisconsin destinations with recreational activities and some vacation rental ideas. We are ready to kick off the blog series with a popular northern Wisconsin location: St. Germain.
Popular Recreational Activities in St. Germain:
Hiking and Biking:
St. Germain is ideal for anyone looking to explore the area by foot or bike. The St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail offers 12 miles of family-friendly fun. Both visitors and locals love to visit this scenic stretch – and the gentle terrain provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy a leisurely trip. To access the trail, there is a Bike & Hike Park behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce (Highways 70 & 155). If you are looking for a trail a bit off of the beaten path, we recommend the Shannon Lake Trail. During the warm months, it is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. The hiking loops range from 2.3 miles to 7 miles. The lake loop is one of our favorites because it offers fantastic lake sights and is ideal for viewing wildlife. Once winter hits, the Shannon Lake Trail is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Golfing:
We find that many vacationers express their interest in golfing while on vacation. Well, be sure to pack you clubs when visiting St. Germain because you are in for a treat. There are 16 courses within a 20 minute drive of St. Germain!! What does that mean for you? Options. Flexibility. Fun. Two popular options are The St. Germain Golf Club & 19th Hole Par 3. Whether you are an aspiring professional golfer or a newbie, there is something for you.
Water Recreation
How could we not mention the exciting water recreation offered in the St. Germain area. This area has some of the cleanest water & locals and vacationers definitely take advantage of that. Take a break and relax on the sandy shoreline reading a good book or making a splash in one of the lakes. Other popular activities: kayaking, canoeing, skiing, tubing, pontooning, can you tell that the possibilities are endless? Many of the rental properties in St. Germain come with these options or have affordable rental prices for kayaks/pontoon boats/etc. Be sure to ask the owners.
Summer Events
The Cropsey Vacation Rentals owners provided some awesome insight regarding summer events in the St. Germain area. Every Monday from Memorial day to Labor Day, the town hosts a large flea and farmer’s market featuring over 400 vendors. The farmer’s market is a new addition for the 2014 season that will be held in conjunction with the flea market. Following this, there is Monday Night Bingo from the first Monday in June to nearly the end of August. The Cropsey owners say that over $1,000 is guaranteed to be given away each week – wow!
Love St. Germain, Where to Stay?:
We love it too. Plus, because it is quite popular, there are a variety of vacation rental options, so you are sure to find something that fits your needs. Some properties are quaint and sleep just 2 while others are quite large and can sleep up to 15. We list over 100 St. Germain vacation rentals so be sure to check those out. Here are a few ideas to get you started. Be sure to click on the photo to view more property information!
