Where you’ll be playing

St. Germain & Sayner

  • Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail System: More than 50 miles of smooth, paved trail connect St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction, and beyond. Morning pedal with loons calling? Yes, please.
  • Awassa Nature Preserve: A mellow network of forest paths right in St. Germain—great for a first‑day leg stretch with kids.
  • Snowmobile Hall of Fame & Museum: Racing sleds, vintage iron, and Northwoods stories. It’s a must‑stop on a cold day.
  • Bo‑Boen Snowmobile Trails: When the flakes stack up, this club’s groomed routes are legendary. Trailers fit easily at many StepAway homes.

Eagle River

  • The World’s Largest Chain of Freshwater Lakes: Launch for walleye at dawn or cruise past islands on a slow afternoon.
  • Shops & snacks: Warm up between runs with coffee, bakery stops, or a classic supper club.

Minocqua & Woodruff

  • Northern Highland–American Legion State Forest: Hundreds of lakes and miles of trail for paddling, birding, and snowshoeing.
  • Min‑Aqua Bats Water Ski Show (summer): Free shows that turn Lake Minocqua into a stage—bring a lawn chair and cheer.

Seasonal trip ideas

Spring: Chase panfish in warming bays, bike the Heart of Vilas with maples budding, and sit by the fire when the temps dip after sunset.

Summer: Dock a pontoon at lunch, watch eagles hunt the shoreline, and end the day with sunsets that linger forever. Families love sandy shallows for splash time.

Fall: Color tours by bike or ATV/UTV, pumpkin‑patch detours, and evenings that pair chili with a star‑packed sky.

Winter: Sledding on the Bo‑Boen system, cross‑country loops in the state forest, and hot‑mug mornings before first tracks. Ice anglers, bring the shack and swap stories at dusk.

Smart planning tips from local managers

  • Trail access matters: Ask which cabins connect fastest to sled or ATV routes.
  • Boat & toy logistics: Many driveways handle trailers. Confirm dock dimensions and water depth for your rig.
  • Bring the crew: Multi‑bedroom homes with second living spaces keep early birds and night owls happy.
  • Pets welcome: Several rentals allow well‑behaved dogs—get the rules and nearby dog‑friendly beaches.

Cabintimer itinerary blueprint (weekend version)

Friday: Arrive, quick grocery run, sunset dock time. Sheet‑pan nachos, then board games.

Saturday: Morning pedal on the Heart of Vilas. Lunch in town. Afternoon paddle or swim. Golden‑hour photos on the pier, then a cabin fish fry.

Sunday: Coffee on the deck, a museum stop or short hike, and one last cast before checkout. Everyone leaves a little lake‑soaked and grinning.

Battle of the Wisconsin Waterparks

The Great Debate of Natural Lakes versus Wisconsin Waterparks

It’s clear to us that we have an obsession with Wisconsin lakes, which is great because Wisconsin is filled with them, so much, that you would be hard pressed to be able to go on vacation without having a lake within a thirty minute drive. We also love the waterparks, where thrills of being upside down and turned around on a ride can excite every little kid in us. The Wisconsin Dells has the largest concentration of waterparks in the world! We can give you the cold hard facts on why Wisconsin is truly a battle of the waterparks but only you can decide which one truly wins the crown.

Vilas County:

In one county alone, Vilas has one of the largest concentration of freshwater lakes on the planet. With that being said, almost all 1,300 lakes are surrounded by pristine forests, trails and rolling hills. This is your chance to strap on some skis or sit in a tube and go for a wild ride across the vast lakes. Pack a picnic and paddle out to observe the sunset setting on the lake. You can also drop a line and catch dinner (at a fraction of the cost than at a restaurant).  In the winter, you can pick and choose between ice fishing, ice skating, ATV, ice boating, and cross country skiing. Can you imagine standing in line for 30 minutes for a chance to do one of these lakeside activities? After a long day outside putting at a nearby golf course or being out on the boat, you might want to head back to your cabin for refreshments or to sit by the fire and roast marshmallows. Wisconsin Dells:

With so many options for water play, this concrete jungle will have your head spinning. Lots of record breaking rides, fun restaurants, shows, and attractions bring a lot of tourism into Wisconsin from surrounding areas in the Midwest. Whether you like to hit the wave pool, slide down the tubes, surf the tide, or run around in the sprinklers, there is fun for every age and level of exercise. These waterparks spark lots of creativity. You could be a pirate, Hades, or the captain of a ship. You can rock climb, bowl, gamble, or zipline through the trees. The Wisconsin Dells can be overcrowded and a little heavy on the checkbook but when a family rents a vacation home, they can escape the hustle and bustle without missing a beat while saving a few dollars by gathering groceries and cooking at home. Some are even near a lake for the best of both worlds! To enjoy Wisconsin Dells attractions while vacationing in a cabin, lake front cabin, or vacation rental, click on one of these surrounding towns:

No matter what you choose, there will always be plenty of water to play on. Choose your next cabin or vacation rental in Wisconsin and you wil surely be pleased with both but we want to know your opinion! What do you think is better for a vacation and why?

Fun, Wisconsin Vacation Destination: St. Germain

It’s that time of year again. There have been a few warmer days & people are starting to believe that there will indeed be summer. We’ve been starting to see more and more inquiries come through for the summer months, that’s where we come in. We want to help inspire those that are beginning their summer vacation planning. For the next few weeks, we will be sharing some popular Wisconsin destinations with recreational activities and some vacation rental ideas. We are ready to kick off the blog series with a popular northern Wisconsin location: St. Germain.

Popular Recreational Activities in St. Germain:

Hiking and Biking:

St. Germain is ideal for anyone looking to explore the area by foot or bike. The St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail offers 12 miles of family-friendly fun. Both visitors and locals love to visit this scenic stretch – and the gentle terrain provide the perfect opportunity to enjoy a leisurely trip. To access the trail, there is a Bike & Hike Park behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce (Highways 70 & 155). If you are looking for a trail a bit off of the beaten path, we recommend the Shannon Lake Trail. During the warm months, it is ideal for hiking and mountain biking. The hiking loops range from 2.3 miles to 7 miles. The lake loop is one of our favorites because it offers fantastic lake sights and is ideal for viewing wildlife. Once winter hits, the Shannon Lake Trail is perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Golfing:

We find that many vacationers express their interest in golfing while on vacation. Well, be sure to pack you clubs when visiting St. Germain because you are in for a treat. There are 16 courses within a 20 minute drive of St. Germain!! What does that mean for you? Options. Flexibility. Fun. Two popular options are The St. Germain Golf Club & 19th Hole Par 3. Whether you are an aspiring professional golfer or a newbie, there is something for you.

Water Recreation

How could we not mention the exciting water recreation offered in the St. Germain area. This area has some of the cleanest water & locals and vacationers definitely take advantage of that. Take a break and relax on the sandy shoreline reading a good book or making a splash in one of the lakes. Other popular activities: kayaking, canoeing, skiing, tubing, pontooning, can you tell that the possibilities are  endless? Many of the rental properties in St. Germain come with these options or have affordable rental prices for kayaks/pontoon boats/etc. Be sure to ask the owners.

Summer Events

The Cropsey Vacation Rentals owners provided some awesome insight regarding summer events in the St. Germain area. Every Monday from Memorial day to Labor Day, the town hosts a large flea and farmer’s market featuring over 400 vendors. The farmer’s market is a new addition for the 2014 season that will be held in conjunction with the flea market. Following this, there is Monday Night Bingo from the first Monday in June to nearly the end of August. The Cropsey owners say that over $1,000 is guaranteed to be given away each week – wow!

Love St. Germain, Where to Stay?:

We love it too. Plus, because it is quite popular, there are a variety of vacation rental options, so you are sure to find something that fits your needs. Some properties are quaint and sleep just 2 while others are quite large and can sleep up to 15. We list over 100 St. Germain vacation rentals so be sure to check those out.
