Imagine a sunset while you swing here….ah….

Hillcrest Resort is a cabin resort on the Manitowish Chain of Lakes. This cabin sits right on the river that connect two lakes (which also flows into many more). This is a fisherman’s paradise. Record size muskie and walleye come out of these waters. Hillcrest even has a fish cleaning house and outdoor grill for your fish fry dinner.

While camping involves packing up most of the house, this resort takes care of the most. Things you won’t have to pack are:

Linens, coffee maker, blankets, pillows, and cookware.

Things you should pack:

Fishing pole, bait, and net for all types of fishing, bicycles for our newly paved and scenic trails, camera, sunblock, marshmallows for the fire pit, and adventurous company.

Dockside picnic? No need to go inside on such beautiful days

This area was once the hiding ground for  Dillinger Gang when he eluded the FBI in a hail of gunfire in a shootout. Hence why Johnny Depp’s movie Public Enemies filmed scenes from Little Bohemia nearby. There is also a water ski show, a casino, and a nature preserve nearby.

Just read what one guest had to say about this resort:

‘Hillcrest Resort is a great place to vacation. I love being on the river and yet centrally located on the Manitowish Chain of 10 Lakes so it is easy to get to all the lakes on the Chain. All the cabins are 2-bedroom, they are charming and all the cabins are close to the water. There are 2 places to swim and docks for every cabin as well as a rowboat included in the rental. The firepit is very nice, as well as the playground, the basketball hoop, the paddleboat, the canoe and the snowmobile trail is within 1/8 mile of the cabins and is great in the summertime for hiking and biking. Across the highway is Starr Beach with grills, picnic tables and a sandy walk-in beach. The resort is located within a mile of Little Bohemia Restaurant featured in the recent Johnny Depp film PUBLIC ENEMIES as well as other nice restaurants and a Trigs food store within 2 miles. All all-around fun cabin experience with lots of cabin amenities. I love the time that I have spent at Hillcrest Resort. Caroline Mitchell —5 star’

Let’s go for an off-road #ATV ride in #Minnesota

ATVing and Off highway vehicles, OHV for short, are growing in popularity and is quite possibly one of the most popular outdoor sports in Minnesota. We want to share with you some of the best places to ride.

ATVing in Minnesota

Before we get in to all the good trail information, let us give you a few facts before you hop on.

  • riders born after July 1st 1987 has to pass a required safety course for ATVs and OHMs ( off-road motorcycles)  if you’re under the age of 16.
  • nonresidents will also need to posses registration papers if the vehicle is not registered in Minnesota. This registration costs 21.00*. riders also don’t need it if they are related to the person’s property if the trail is owned by a relative or spouse.
  • also be sure to check for current conditions on trails as this year’s roads could have been washed out due to heavy rain.

Rates could change, check with local DNR to see current rates.

Minnesota has over 1,000 miles of off-road trails and range from easy to difficult with challenging courses. One of the areas known for OHV riding is Iron Range. This area has over 4,000 acres of land and 36 miles of various types of trails. This park has no entrance fee currently and is open almost all year round except for Minnesota’s firearm deer hunting season. This area has 3 gas stations.

The next recreational area you should know about is the Moose Lake/Deer River area; called the SOO Line North Trail. This could be one of the easiest areas for ATVs and OHMs so bring the beginner or the kids along and hit the trails with ease. You will find food, gas and lodging. We suggest renting a Deer River cabin on Moose Lake for less of a hassle and the ultimate experience that this lodging can offer.

This old abandoned railroad trail unwinds its 15 mile course along many little ponds and hardwood forest.

Our favorite trail for MN snowmobiling (or the ski-doo or Arctic Cat) is the Paul Bunyan Trail that leads us through 15 different towns. Of course, we recommend you rent cabins in Brainerd and cabins in Walker. The Paul Bunyan trail is free to access and is well marked for recreation users throughout its 112 miles. This makes it the longest trail in Minnesota and 19 of those miles are paved! With so many lakes alongside the trail, this trail offers fantastic views of nature, wildlife, and various Minnesota towns. Walker sits on Leech Lake, the 3rd largest lake in Minnesota. Walker has magnificent Pine trees, a great beach, and panoramic views of bluffs. This trail also offers many activities, contest, games and local events — make sure your next vacation stay is right alongside this trail. Get a group together, bring the snowmobiles and enjoy all that our Leech Lake vacation rentals have to offer.

A quick reminder about our RentMinnesotaCabins.com website. Once you find a vacation rental(s) you like, you inquire and book directly with rental owners – booking direct is the only way to assure you are getting the best rental rate. Booking through other 3rd party websites likely means your paying more for the same rental because of the booking-commission. BOOKING DIRECT JUST MAKES SENSE.

#PetFriendly Accommodations Set the Standard for New Trends in Vacation Rentals

It’s always been a question Wisconsin vacation rental owners ask themselves; “Should we allow pets at our vacation rental property?” The answer will depend if they could use the extra bookings. Traveling with pets is a trend that’s not going away any time soon, and I would be surprised if it ever went away, but the desire to bring pets along has become increasingly important in where vacationers stay. Other than instilling a pet deposit, what can you do to ensure that you do not turn away any business unless absolutely necessary?

dog

Questions to ask renters about their pets:

  1. How big is your pet?
  2. What breed is she? Do you have papers to prove this?
  3. Has he been neutered or spade?
  4. Is he good around strangers?
  5. Is he potty trained?
  6. Do you leash the dog ( there could be a leash law)
  7. Has he had his shots?
  8. Are you planning on leaving your pet for any reason if you exit the property?

You might ask why it’s such a big deal to allow pets. They can be messy right? Well, there are a few bad apples out there but if you ask the right questions and prepare your home with the right stuff and give your guests directions, it can be nothing but smooth sailing from there, and guess what? You can actually charge more for your “pet friendly” Wisconsin cabin rentals.

A few suggestions for showing your guests that you will be accommodating but not walked all over:

  1. Create a welcome gift consisting of doggie bags, a helpful list of tick solutions, doggie treats and pet hair rollers for carpet or couches.
  2. Give a rundown where the carpet cleaner is, the glass cleaner and extra rags or booties for paws
  3. State a list for charges if something were to be damaged such as a couch or a window. Explain why there you charge more, such as cleaning fees to make sure all hair is out, cleaning vents and A/C units, etc….

Most guests are just happy that they can bring their pet for their vacation, eliminating the kennel fees and enjoying family and fun moments that the can share with their beloved pet.
