Searching for a #NewYork #Vacation Rental? Read these 8 #tips before you book it.

New York Vacation Rentals are the trend for 2016! The advantages of staying at a NY vacation rental are numerous. There are lots of pet friendly options, homes with fireplaces and fire pits, chalets and cottages right next to the lake. You have private parking and sometimes piers for your boat. Vacation rentals give families room to spread out and enjoy each other. Something a hotel just can’t offer.

The time to book our summer 2016 vacation rental is here! What do you need to do before you book your vacation rental? Here are some tips:

  1. Inquire about your vacation rental with the actual owner or manager before you book. They know the property (and the area) best and will have you living like a local on Day 1.
  2. If you are looking to bring your pet, be sure you know the Pet Policy. Some will not allow certain breeds or sizes of dogs. It might also be good to check out if there is a kennel or fenced in area for your pet while you’re out at the lake. Compare vacation rentals with a pet policy versus kenneling them near your home if your on tighter budget.
  3. Know the cleaning policy. Some rental owners or managers charge a cleaning fee and don’t expect much cleaning. There others who expect to have the place ready for the next renters. Whatever the case may be, it’s always wise to take pictures or note any possible previous damage. Be very thorough.
  4. Picking up the keys. Some rentals may have a lock box on the door. Some owners might meet you at the property or have them hidden somewhere. Property Managers might have you stop at their office and pick up the keys. Know before you go!
  5. Ask about mobile phone reception. Vacation rentals in New York can be remote. If you need use your cell phone for directions, or to check in, make sure you will have cell coverage. We recommend you have a physical map in the vehicle just in case. If you have to stay connected, ask about Wi-Fi availability.
  6. Always ask about supplies and what you should bring. Some supply bed sheets but not towels, or vice versa. Some supply both. Always ask about a medical kit or if you need to bring certain kitchen items that you can’t live without (like a bottle opener) or a muffin pan. You get the idea. Some cabins and cottages offer canoes, kayaks or bikes on site.
  7. Check out a calendar of events or a town’s Facebook page to research area events. Keep in mind that rental prices are often higher during summer, holiday’s, and big events.
  8. Ask who you need to contact if you have any emergencies. If there is a leaky faucet or a light goes out, you will know whom to contact.

An October weekend at the Prairie Hill Farm vacation rental: The Farmhouse.

As the owner of RentWisconsinCabins.com, my family and I choose to stay at cabins, cottages, lodges and homes whenever we can. Thanks to Tish and Robert, the owner of Prairie Hill Farm in Merrimac, WI, we got to experience Vacation Time on the farm! Vacation rentals come in all shapes and sizes, and unlike hotel rooms, no two rentals are the same. My wife and two daughters had the opportunity to stay at their Farmhouse vacation rental. Tish and Robert have 2 vacation rentals on their spacious 80-acre farm with several groomed hiking trails. It was like hiking at a state park. At the highest elevation is a grass landing strip for small airplanes – this is the only vacation rental I can think of that comes with its own landing strip!

We were lucky enough to stay at the beautiful Farmhouse in October, during the peak fall color season. The trip to and from the “farm” included a Ferry ride across the Wisconsin River (at Merrimac). The bright foliage up and down the river was spectacular.

We arrived shortly before the check in time of 3PM and were surprised to see how private the setting was. The checkout time of 11AM was refreshing too – sleep in, no hurry, have breakfast at a country pace. The two rentals on the property were separated by woods, valleys and fields. We did not see the renters in the Cabin the entire weekend – even on the hiking trails. If you like a peaceful, country setting, either of these rentals will work. We did take a peak at the Cabin, which was up by the grass airstrip and it appeared to have an amazing view.

Back at the Farmhouse, the kids played soccer in the large back yard, while I flew my new Drone/Video Camera in the large front yard. Here’s a YouTube video from the drone.

prarie-hill-farm

Because my wife grew up in a farmhouse in Waunakee, Wisconsin she expected some sounds and smells of critters on the farm. However, when we stepped inside the house her first reaction was how clean the home was. In fact, the entire weekend she commented on how unique and spotless the home was. And yes, there were plenty of familiar farmhouse features that brought back memories. The “trademark” steep & narrow stairway up to the two bedrooms was just like her childhood home. I quickly found a map of the farm that detailed the hiking trails and area points-of-interest – helpful for planning the days activities.

Lots of amenities at the Farmhouse: Great movie selection for late-night viewing, lots of reading material, outdoor charcoal grill ((which I did not get to use), big wood deck (which we did get to use), kitchen was big and cupboards had everything needed to cook and serve three meals a day. Plus a dishwasher and washer & dryer. One of my favorite things to do was grab some mid-morning coffee, sit on the front porch and enjoy the warm sun with my daughters – one of which is heading off to college in 2016. Memories like this are rare, and I could not imagine choosing to stay in a hotel room.

They say cabin-type getaways are becoming more popular with next-gen vacationers. This is exactly why my company is rolling out several state-specific, vacation rental websites. I grew up on our family-owned cabin resort in northern Wisconsin, so the idea of staying at cabins and cottages is not new, but I am glad to see the rental industry is getting some much-deserved attention.

The downstairs master bedroom window faces a massive Willow tree that guards the farmhouse. Waking up to that view both mornings was special. The Prairie Hill Farm vacation rentals are perfect for your family vacation. Rent the Farmhouse and the Cabin if you have a larger group.

Popular Leech Lake Resort leaves you feeling secluded this Fall

Popular Leech Lake Resort leaves you feeling secluded this Fall

When booking your fall vacation, ice fishing weekend, or summer getaway it is always important to check off the necessities and must need amenities, is it not? That is essentially why rentals vs. hotels consistently come out with rentals on top. If you’re unsure why, think about it this way…

  • Your booking is more personal than a mega hotel chain.
  • Parking is not only closer but much more private and usually has space for your boats, etc.
  • Pet Friendly. Your pet is part of the family too, don’t kennel them.
  • They often provide fully stocked kitchen appliances and grills so you save loads of money on restaurant bills and can even cook in your pajamas.
  • Most are lakefront or with a forest setting, can’t get that at a hotel chain on Main Street.
  • Decks are much larger with furniture and fire pits for evening entertainment
  • No shared hallways makes your evening bed time a lot more peaceful.

The list goes on and on….

What makes Shore of Leech Lake stand out? Shores of Leech Lake have all of these amenities mentioned above and even more!

IT’S CABIN TIME NOW

Best Hunting Areas in Minnesota 2014

grouse

Minnesota is known for hunting. Traditions have started within family and friends. It’s a contest of who the sharp shooter is in the group. Or, it’s an excuse to go early in the morning and be gone till dusk. Either way you look at it, hunting is still great in Minnesota. This list is comprised of the three best counties to hunt in. You’re in luck, we have cabins and vacation rentals for your hunting needs so be sure to explore the links below to see what best fits your hunting party.

Let’s get started:

1. Hubbard County: We like to lump this in a county because the area is loaded with potential venison. Last year a total of 241 deer were harvested here. The towns of Park Rapids and Akeley provide many lodging, While hunting has been down statewide this year, the Gulch region is still densely populated with deer. Now is the time to remind hunters that it is “Buck” only this year but don’t let that stop you. This year can be the year that you hone on your skills and show yourself whose boss after all.

2. Itsaca: They don’t mean to brag but they do it anyways. The Chippewa National Forest is surely a haven for hunting-even this year. Don’t let a “Buck” only season deter you from even getting the small game this year (smaller the target, harder to shoot right)? The season is well under way for small game such as sharp tail grouse, rabbits, squirrels, pheasant, waterfowl (central and southern zone). Deer is some zones are permitted till the end of the month but check local guides for additional information on which zone you will be in.

3. Becker County: With over 110,000 acres and even additional wildlife management areas, this area is known for its deer ,bear, grouse, wild turkey and waterfowl hunting. This is also home to many sportsmen club to really become the sharp shooter you can be so even if it is passed your ideal hunting time, don’t completely throw out the idea of shooting (after all it is a sport).

While these counties are your best shots for bringing home dinner, you may ask “That’s great and all but now we need to figure out where we are going to stay.” The answer to that question is very easy. We will even do half the work for you. Click on the links below to see what we can offer you in terms of the area close to your desired hunting ground. That’s right. We just did the research on perfect hunting areas in MN and now we take the guess-work out of your vacation rental. We know, we’re very generous.
