Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort: Classic Northwoods Cabin Life on the Sugar Camp Chain. A RentWisconsinCabins.com Listing Partner Since 2022!

If your radar is pinging for a true Up North cabin experience, set your sights on Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Since 1928, this family-run resort has welcomed generations to its shoreline on Sand Lake—part of the five-lake Sugar Camp Chain. Cabins are spread along a gentle slope with tall pines, sandy swim areas, boat docks, and that easygoing Northwoods pace that nudges you outside before breakfast and brings you back to a crackling fire after dark.

Cabins for couples, families, and the whole crew

Pitlik’s offers a mix of classic log cabins and larger rentals. Expect full kitchens, lakeside porches, cozy gathering spaces, and that satisfying “pair of boots by the door” simplicity. Some layouts cater to couples seeking quiet mornings on the pier; others are perfect for multi-family trips with bunkrooms, big tables for card games, and space to spread out. Pets are welcome in select cabins, and many rentals sit steps from the sand—so the coffee-to-kayak commute is about thirty seconds.

Chain Lake Hideaway – 2BR waterfront (plus sleeper) 1.5 miles from the lodge; gas fireplace, laundry, patio, private dock—pets considered.

Dam Lake Villa – 3BR lakefront (sleeps up to 9) 1.6 miles from the lodge; 3-season villa with built-in grill/bar, fireplace, laundry—pets considered.

Sand Lake Lakehouse – 4BR on Sand Lake with two levels of sleeping space, gas fireplace, modern kitchen, washer/dryer, southern-exposure deck—pets considered.

Eat & drink at the Lodge (and don’t miss Friday Fish Fry)

A huge part of the Pitlik’s experience happens at the main lodge. Stop in for hearty plates, Wisconsin tap favorites, and the resort’s famous Ultimate Bloody Mary. It’s social, it’s lively, and it’s always a short walk back to your cabin. When the fish fry bell rings on Friday, locals and resort guests make a beeline—arrive hungry.

Life on the Sugar Camp Chain

Five connected lakes—Sand, Dam, Chain, Stone, and Echo—mean endless routes for pontoon cruising, paddling, and fishing. Anglers chase panfish, bass, walleye, and yes, musky. The sandy swim area is friendly for kids, and calm morning water is tailor-made for paddleboards. Bring or rent a boat and spend the day lake-hopping, then drift back to your pier as loons call across the bay.

Four seasons of play

Summer is for swims, s’mores, and sunny boat days. Fall turns the shoreline into a fiery color show with cool nights perfect for the fireplace. Winter flips the script: Eagle River is a snowmobile capital with state trails linking right from the resort, plus cross-country skiing, ice fishing, sledding, and nearby downhill options. Spring? Quiet woods, migrating birds, and glassy, crowd-free water.

Nearby things to do in Eagle River & St. Germain

You’re a short drive from mini-golf, go-karts, horseback riding, local events, and trail systems. Golfers can pick from several public courses. Rain in the forecast? Pop into town for a museum stop, a bakery run, or a browse through outfitter shops. Winter visitors should mark the World Championship Snowmobile Derby on the calendar—part spectacle, part tradition.

This two-room, two‑bath cabin sits a few steps from the shoreline on Lynx Lake—at the northern tip of the famous Eagle River Chain. Cabintimers get rare perks here: a private boat launch and dock just outside the door, sandy, gradual frontage that’s perfect for swimming, pet‑friendly stays, and a whole‑home backup generator so your vacation doesn’t skip a beat if the power flickers.

Why Cabintimers love this cabin

  • You get the place to yourself. There’s only one rental on the property—no shared fire pit, grill, or shoreline. Spread out, unplug, and let the lake set your schedule.
  • Bring the boat—or rent one. Launch your fishing boat or pontoon on‑site, tie up at your private, powered dock, or have a rental delivered right to the pier. No crowded public ramps, no scrambling for slips.
  • Sandy swim area. The shoreline steps down just an inch or two to clear, shallow water with a gentle slope—great for kids and lazy floats.
  • Stay connected when others can’t. The backup generator keeps water hot, lights on, internet streaming (HBO, Showtime, Starz, more), A/C humming, and the coffee brewing.
  • Easy sleeping for couples or small families. A queen Murphy bed with a Serta Perfect Sleeper, a queen sleeper sofa, plus a twin daybed with trundle.
  • Dog‑friendly. Well‑behaved pups are welcome—call for details.
  • Complimentary rowboat with oars and life vests so you can sneak out for sunrise casts or sunset paddles.
  • Full kitchen & outdoor cooking. Gas range/oven, microwave, coffee maker, cookware, plus a gas grill, picnic table, and lakeside seating.

Where you’re staying

Holiday Harbor sits on Lynx Lake, part of the storied Eagle River Chain, a gateway to endless water. Step onto your dock and you’re minutes from classic Northwoods scenes: mornings dripping with mist, eagles tracing the treeline, and the soft hush of pines. Musky, walleye, bass, and panfish lure anglers out early; paddlers hug the shoreline to watch turtles slide from logs; swimmers post up by that sandy edge and call it a day.

What to do nearby (besides floating all afternoon)

  • Fish & boat the Chain. Explore link‑by‑link, stop for lunch by boat, or drift a weedline. Guides in Eagle River can help you target trophy muskies or introduce new anglers to the fun.
  • World Championship Derby Complex. In winter, Eagle River roars to life during the historic snowmobile races. Tour the grounds, visit during race weekends, and hop on meticulously groomed trail systems that spiderweb across Vilas County.
  • Three Eagle Trail. Bike or hike this scenic route connecting Eagle River and Three Lakes through forests and wetlands—blazing colors in fall.
  • Nicolet National Forest. Trail‑rich public land east of town for hiking, birding, snowshoeing, and quiet exploration.
  • Downtown Eagle River. Scoop old‑fashioned candy, browse outfitters, and fuel up at supper clubs that feel like time capsules.
  • Cranberry season. Come fall, tour local marshes, grab cranberry goodies, and chase peak color around the lakes.

Practical info Cabintimers always ask

  • Weekly stays, Saturday changeover.
  • Fast Wi‑Fi (wired + wireless) and free streaming channels (plus a Roku).
  • Two bathrooms, each with a shower—no waiting in line after a swim.
  • Fire pit for lakeside s’mores (bring wood from within 25 miles).
  • Parking for your trailer and easy in‑and‑out at the private launch.

Book direct and keep it local

Skip the big‑box booking fees and talk to the folks who know the shoreline best. When you book directly with the owner, you avoid service fees, get the most accurate availability, and tap into local knowledge—from “where they’re biting” to “which supper club has the best Friday fish fry.”

Cozy Cabins with Modern Comforts

Cedaroma’s ten cabins range from a cozy one-bedroom cabin perfect for couples to spacious vacation homes like the FarmHouse and Main LodgeHouse for larger groups. No matter which cabin you choose, you’ll enjoy a blend of classic Northwoods ambiance and modern amenities. Each cabin comes with a fully equipped kitchen (yes, full-size appliances and all the cookware you need) and a comfortable living area to relax after your adventures. Many cabins even feature air conditioning and dishwashers for those summer stays and easy clean-up. Several have gas fireplaces or wood stoves to keep things cozy on cool evenings. And with Cedaroma’s lakefront location, your rental isn’t far from the water’s edge – some cabins have direct lake views and are just steps from the beach and docks for easy lake access.

Guests often remark on the thoughtful touches and cleanliness of the cabins. One reviewer wrote, “A feast for the soul. That’s how I would describe my experience at Cedaroma Lodge. Beautiful surroundings, cozy, very clean, well-appointed cabins.” Cedaroma has preserved its time-honored charm while adding fresh updates and comforts vacationers appreciate, from strong Wi-Fi to fresh linens and comfortable beds. It’s the kind of place where you can unplug by the fire or watch a movie on the flat-screen – you decide your pace.

Pet-Friendly, Year-Round Northwoods Retreat

It’s not easy finding a truly pet-friendly resort in Wisconsin’s Northwoods, but Cedaroma is proud to welcome your four-legged family members (the resort even has an “official mascot,” Sparky the Blue Heeler pup, ready to greet guests with a wagging tail!). As one of the few pet-friendly resorts in the area, Cedaroma ensures that everyone – including Fido – feels right at home. The atmosphere is warm and family-friendly, making it ideal for reunions, friend groups, and couples alike.

Cedaroma Resort operates year-round, so you can enjoy the beauty of St. Germain in any season. Summer brings swimming and boating on the lake, while winter transforms the property into a snowy wonderland. The cabins are all-season, heated for winter coziness (some with that toasty fireplace) and cooled in the summer (thanks to that A/C). No matter when you visit, the Little Saint Germain Lake views and fresh pine-scented air create that up-north state of mind.

Fun on the Water: Summer at Cedaroma

Summer at Cedaroma Resort is all about lake fun and outdoor adventure. Little Saint Germain Lake spans over 900 acres, offering plenty of space for boating and fishing. Cedaroma makes it easy to enjoy the water with pontoon boat rentals available on sitet. Gather your group, pack a cooler, and cruise the lake for an afternoon of fishing or sunset sightseeing. Prefer a quieter paddle? Guests get to use canoes, kayaks, paddle boats, and stand-up paddleboards for free with their stay – an incredible perk that lets you explore the lake at your leisure. From casting a line for musky or walleye at dawn to an afternoon paddle along the shore, there’s no shortage of ways to soak up the sun on Little St. Germain.

For those who like to stay active on land, Cedaroma sits right next to the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail (St. Germain trailhead). In fact, the resort is adjacent to a paved trail system connecting nearly 40 miles of scenic pathways. Bring your bike (or borrow one of Cedaroma’s cruiser bikes) and pedal through forests and wetlands on this renowned trail. The Heart of Vilas trail is great for all ages – an easy ride into St. Germain’s town center or a longer trek to neighboring communities. Hiking and ATV/UTV trails are also nearby for more outdoor exploration.

And of course, nothing beats a classic Northwoods summer evening at the resort: grilling out on your cabin’s deck (each comes with a BBQ grill), swapping stories around the campfire, and watching the stars twinkle over the lake. Cedaroma truly lets you savor “fun where it’s in our nature,” from swimming and fishing to just relaxing by the shore.

Winter Wonderland: Snowmobiling, Snowshoeing & More

When winter arrives in St. Germain, Cedaroma Resort embraces the season. The cabins stay open year-round, providing a cozy basecamp for winter sports. St. Germain is famous for its extensive snowmobile trail network, and Cedaroma is ideally situated to hop right on the trails – there’s direct access from the resort, with ample parking for your snowmobile trailers as one guest noted. Vilas County grooms hundreds of miles of snowmobile routes, and from Cedaroma you can ride for hours through snowy forests and across frozen lakes. The town is a true snowmobiler’s paradise (after all, nearby Eagle River is known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World, and St. Germain hosts part of that same trail system).

A must-visit for any sledding enthusiast is the Snowmobile Hall of Fame & Museum in St. Germain, which showcases over 100 vintage and championship snowmobiles, plus memorabilia that tells the story of this exciting sport. It’s a great stop to immerse yourself in Northwoods snowmobiling culture and see some classic machines up close.

If you prefer a quieter pace in winter, strap on some snowshoes or cross-country skis and hit the nearby trails. The woods around Cedaroma are serene under a blanket of snow – you might spot deer or fresh tracks of wildlife on a peaceful trek. Little St. Germain Lake offers ice fishing opportunities as well, for those eager to drop a line through the ice. And when you return to your cabin, you can warm up by the fire with a cup of hot cocoa. Winter vacations here are just as magical as summer ones.

St. Germain Activities for Every Cabintimer

Beyond the resort, the St. Germain area is packed with activities and attractions that Cabintimers (our cabin-loving travelers) will love. Here are a few highlights to add to your itinerary:

  • Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail: A scenic multi-use trail stretching roughly 40 miles through St. Germain and surrounding communities. Perfect for biking in summer or fat-tire biking in winter, this trail winds past lakes, forests, and wetlands. Thorn Cottage: 12 Years of Listing Lakefront Memories on RentWisconsinCabins.com.

For twelve years, Thorn Cottage has been a valued member of the RentWisconsinCabins.com family, part of the It’s Cabin Time® network. We’re thrilled to celebrate this long-standing connection. Thorn Cottage offers Cabintimers an authentic lakefront experience in Sugar Camp, Wisconsin. It sits directly on Dam Lake. Dam Lake is a key part of the beautiful Sugar Camp chain of lakes.

One major benefit we champion at It’s Cabin Time® is booking directly with owners. When you reserve Thorn Cottage, you connect straight with Elaine and Joseph Thorn. This means no added booking fees or surprise service charges often found on large travel sites. You talk directly to the people who know the cottage best.

Your Sugar Camp, WI Lakefront Cabin Awaits

Thorn Cottage provides a comfortable base for your Northwoods adventure. The cottage has two bedrooms. It can sleep up to seven guests. This makes it suitable for families or small groups. You’ll find new mattresses on the full beds ensuring a good night’s sleep.

Enjoy your morning coffee on the east-facing sun porch. It offers lovely views as the day begins. The full kitchen includes essential appliances like a refrigerator, stove, oven, and microwave. Prepare simple breakfasts or full dinners easily. The bathroom features a combination tub and shower.

Outside is where the lakefront living truly shines. Thorn Cottage rests on a private, quiet dead-end road. You have access to 180 feet of lake frontage. Two docks are available. Use them for docking your own boat, fishing, or just relaxing by the water. A small sandy beach area allows for easy water entry and swimming. Gather around the firepit in the evenings. A picnic table and charcoal grill are also provided for outdoor meals. Guests appreciate the included rowboat for exploring Dam Lake.

Exploring Dam Lake and the Sugar Camp Chain

Dam Lake itself covers 720 acres. It connects to four other lakes: Sand, Stone, Echo, and Chain. Together, they form the Sugar Camp chain, offering miles of water to explore. This chain is known for great fishing. Target musky, walleye, bass, and panfish. You can even access a restaurant directly from the water, making for a fun boating excursion.

The Advantage of Booking Directly with Elaine and Joseph

Choosing Thorn Cottage means more than just finding a place to stay. It means connecting with owners who care about your experience. Elaine and Joseph Thorn have owned the property since 1997. They live just eight miles away. Booking direct offers several key advantages:

  1. No Service Fees: Save money compared to big online travel agencies. Your payment goes directly towards your vacation rental.
  2. Direct Communication: Have questions? Need recommendations? Talk or text directly with Elaine and Joseph. There’s no middleman relaying messages.
  3. Local Expertise: Elaine and Joseph are retired and know the Sugar Camp area intimately. Tap into their knowledge for tips on fishing spots, restaurants, or hidden local spots.

Pets are considered at Thorn Cottage. Please discuss your pet with Elaine and Joseph when inquiring.
