Hillcrest Resort is a cabin resort on the Manitowish Chain of Lakes. This cabin sits right on the river that connect two lakes (which also flows into many more). This is a fisherman’s paradise. Record size muskie and walleye come out of these waters. Hillcrest even has a fish cleaning house and outdoor grill for your fish fry dinner.

While camping involves packing up most of the house, this resort takes care of the most. Things you won’t have to pack are:

Linens, coffee maker, blankets, pillows, and cookware.

Things you should pack:

Fishing pole, bait, and net for all types of fishing, bicycles for our newly paved and scenic trails, camera, sunblock, marshmallows for the fire pit, and adventurous company.

This area was once the hiding ground for  Dillinger Gang when he eluded the FBI in a hail of gunfire in a shootout. Hence why Johnny Depp’s movie Public Enemies filmed scenes from Little Bohemia nearby. There is also a water ski show, a casino, and a nature preserve nearby.

‘Hillcrest Resort is a great place to vacation. I love being on the river and yet centrally located on the Manitowish Chain of 10 Lakes so it is easy to get to all the lakes on the Chain. All the cabins are 2-bedroom, they are charming and all the cabins are close to the water. There are 2 places to swim and docks for every cabin as well as a rowboat included in the rental. The firepit is very nice, as well as the playground, the basketball hoop, the paddleboat, the canoe and the snowmobile trail is within 1/8 mile of the cabins and is great in the summertime for hiking and biking. Across the highway is Starr Beach with grills, picnic tables and a sandy walk-in beach. The resort is located within a mile of Little Bohemia Restaurant featured in the recent Johnny Depp film PUBLIC ENEMIES as well as other nice restaurants and a Trigs food store within 2 miles. Each year the artists are the celebrity here. Each spring there is the Waupaca Art Show that features 40 artists, all creative geniuses with pottery, music, jewelry making, paint, and more. An October weekend at the Prairie Hill Farm vacation rental: The Farmhouse.

As the owner of RentWisconsinCabins.com, my family and I choose to stay at cabins, cottages, lodges and homes whenever we can. Thanks to Tish and Robert, the owner of Prairie Hill Farm in Merrimac, WI, we got to experience Vacation Time on the farm! Vacation rentals come in all shapes and sizes, and unlike hotel rooms, no two rentals are the same. My wife and two daughters had the opportunity to stay at their Farmhouse vacation rental. Tish and Robert have 2 vacation rentals on their spacious 80-acre farm with several groomed hiking trails. It was like hiking at a state park. At the highest elevation is a grass landing strip for small airplanes – this is the only vacation rental I can think of that comes with its own landing strip!

We were lucky enough to stay at the beautiful Farmhouse in October, during the peak fall color season. The trip to and from the “farm” included a Ferry ride across the Wisconsin River (at Merrimac). The bright foliage up and down the river was spectacular.

We arrived shortly before the check in time of 3PM and were surprised to see how private the setting was. The checkout time of 11AM was refreshing too – sleep in, no hurry, have breakfast at a country pace. The two rentals on the property were separated by woods, valleys and fields. We did not see the renters in the Cabin the entire weekend – even on the hiking trails. If you like a peaceful, country setting, either of these rentals will work. We did take a peak at the Cabin, which was up by the grass airstrip and it appeared to have an amazing view.

Back at the Farmhouse, the kids played soccer in the large back yard, while I flew my new Drone/Video Camera in the large front yard. Here’s a YouTube video from the drone.

Because my wife grew up in a farmhouse in Waunakee, Wisconsin she expected some sounds and smells of critters on the farm. However, when we stepped inside the house her first reaction was how clean the home was. In fact, the entire weekend she commented on how unique and spotless the home was. And yes, there were plenty of familiar farmhouse features that brought back memories. The “trademark” steep & narrow stairway up to the two bedrooms was just like her childhood home. I quickly found a map of the farm that detailed the hiking trails and area points-of-interest – helpful for planning the days activities.

Lots of amenities at the Farmhouse: Great movie selection for late-night viewing, lots of reading material, outdoor charcoal grill ((which I did not get to use), big wood deck (which we did get to use), kitchen was big and cupboards had everything needed to cook and serve three meals a day. Plus a dishwasher and washer & dryer. One of my favorite things to do was grab some mid-morning coffee, sit on the front porch and enjoy the warm sun with my daughters – one of which is heading off to college in 2016. Memories like this are rare, and I could not imagine choosing to stay in a hotel room.

They say cabin-type getaways are becoming more popular with next-gen vacationers. This is exactly why my company is rolling out several state-specific, vacation rental websites. I grew up on our family-owned cabin resort in northern Wisconsin, so the idea of staying at cabins and cottages is not new, but I am glad to see the rental industry is getting some much-deserved attention.

The downstairs master bedroom window faces a massive Willow tree that guards the farmhouse. Waking up to that view both mornings was special. The Prairie Hill Farm vacation rentals are perfect for your family vacation. Rent the Farmhouse and the Cabin if you have a larger group.

The Great Debate of Natural Lakes versus Wisconsin Waterparks

   It’s clear to us that we have an obsession with Wisconsin lakes, which is great because Wisconsin is filled with them, so much, that you would be hard pressed to be able to go on vacation without having a lake within a thirty minute drive. We also love the waterparks, where thrills of being upside down and turned around on a ride can excite every little kid in us. The Wisconsin Dells has the largest concentration of waterparks in the world! We can give you the cold hard facts on why Wisconsin is truly a battle of the waterparks but only you can decide which one truly wins the crown.

In one county alone, Vilas has one of the largest concentration of freshwater lakes on the planet. With that being said, almost all 1,300 lakes are surrounded by pristine forests, trails and rolling hills. This is your chance to strap on some skis or sit in a tube and go for a wild ride across the vast lakes. Pack a picnic and paddle out to observe the sunset setting on the lake. You can also drop a line and catch dinner (at a fraction of the cost than at a restaurant).  In the winter, you can pick and choose between ice fishing, ice skating, ATV, ice boating, and cross country skiing. Can you imagine standing in line for 30 minutes for a chance to do one of these lakeside activities? After a long day outside putting at a nearby golf course or being out on the boat, you might want to head back to your cabin for refreshments or to sit by the fire and roast marshmallows. All in all, Wisconsin is a winter wonderland of snow for avid snowmobilers but to fit our criteria for the best areas for snowmobile trails in Wisconsin, it had to be more than just snow and trails. The area needed events, clubs, and hundreds of miles of well groomed trails. When people look for snowmobiling in Wisconsin, they want the true effect. The long weekend or week vacation in a Eagle River cabin, sitting by the fire after a long day of zipping by on a snowmobile, and nobody gets that like we do.
