Campfire Cooking: Gathering Around the Fire for Dinner

It’s a Wisconsin tradition to head down to the crackling campfire at dusk. The roasting fire keeps everyone warm during cool evenings. Campfire songs and stories are shared, and who could forget the s’mores? It is a classic Wisconsin experience! Although many forget that a s’more an occasional hot dog aren’t the only open-flame-friendly food.

Tasty & simple campfire meals

Shish Kabobs

  1. Chop chicken or beef and vegetables: onions, peppers, mushrooms, and cherry tomatoes (even pineapple)
  2. Slid the pieces onto a wooden or metal skewer
  3. Add salt, pepper, or a marinade
  4. Cook over open fire until the vegetables are soften and the meat is cooked through (about 15-20 min.)

Campfire potatoes

  1. Cut potatoes into slices
  2. Feel free to add chopped onion, bacon bits, garlic, butter, or other seasonings
  3. Wrap the food well in aluminum foil
  4. Place the wrapped potatoes in the fire on the coals
  5. The time will depend on the strength of the fire and potatoes size (expect around 30-45 min.)

Pudgy Pies – invest in a pudgy pie iron, many can be found for $15-$25

  1. Butter 2 slices of bread and place one on the iron, butter side down
  2. The add your ingredients –  this is were the creativity comes into play! Some enjoy a simple ham and cheese pie, others make a pizza pie (pizza sauce, cheese, pepperoni), or even a breakfast pie (egg, cheese, and ham)
  3. Take the other buttered slice of bread and place the buttered side up so it touches the iron
  4. Cook the pie much like a marshmallow – remembering to rotate the iron (can take just 1 min. to cook, but depends on fire)

Here’s my challenge to you: next time you’re around gathered around the campfire, try something new. Just remember to not forget about the  s’more — it’s a classic for a reason.
